A 38 year old man has been charged in relation to an attempted robbery at a Northfield supermarket where staff were sprayed with an unknown liquid.

Two members of staff were sprayed after challenging people who were allegedly trying to steal from the Coop store in West Heath Road on the afternoon of Wednesday 4th September.

The incident prompted a swift and large response from emergency services and a total of 6 people – including 2 children – were checked over by West Midlands Ambulance Service at the scene.

The liquid was non-corrosive and fortunately no-one was seriously injured.

David Woodcock, of no fixed address, was arrested by officers in Bilston on Sunday afternoon (15th September).

He appeared before Birmingham Magistrates on Monday (16th September) charged with theft from a shop, possession of an offensive weapon and assault. He was remanded in prison and will appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 10th October.
