A 23 year old man who was left in a critical condition following an assault in Maypole died in hospital today (Sunday 22nd September).

The 23-year-old was attacked in Alcester Road South at around 4.40pm on Thursday (19 September), after it is believed he was involved in an argument with occupants of a passing car.

West Midlands Police confirmed that the man, who suffered a severe head injury, sadly died in hospital today. His family are being supported by specially trained police officers.

21 year old Jamie Taylor from Kings Heath appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on yesterday charged with wounding after handing himself in to police on Friday.

A second man who also surrendered himself to police has been released without charge.

It is thought that two people were involved in the attack, which is now being treated as murder, and investigations are ongoing.

Det Insp Stuart Mobberley, from Homicide department, said: “This is now a murder enquiry, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones at this tragic time.

“We have charged one person in connection with what happened and that charge will be reviewed in due course.

“This is still very much an active investigation, and I’d appeal to anyone who was involved in what happened to hand themselves in before we arrest them.

“If anyone saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police, we need to hear from them as soon as possible.”
