The Environment Agency have issued a flood alert for the River Rea as the Met Office forecast heavy rain for the region from this evening (Saturday 28th September) until the early hours of Sunday.
The alert – issued just after 6.30pm on Saturday 28th – reads:
River levels are forecast to rise at the Selly Park river gauge as a result of expected heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible early Sunday morning around 1:00, 29/09/19.
Flooding may affect low-lying land and roads adjacent to the River Rea between Longbridge and Nechells including Northfield, Kings Norton, Lifford, Stirchley, Selly Park and Digbeth.
Heavy rainfall is forecast overnight. We expect river levels to remain high until later tomorrow morning, 29/09/19.
Our incident response staff are actively checking river levels and the weather forecast.
Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded and avoid using low lying footpaths and bridges near local watercourses.
The Environment Agency will update the alert on their website if the situation changes.
Periods of heavy rain are set to continue into next week, with a yellow weather warning already having been issued for Monday night (30th September).
