The building of 27 new flats to support homeless people into independent living has been approved by Birmingham City Council.

Work on the self-contained ‘move on’ flats will begin next year, next to the existing revamped Magdalene Court site, which provides short term accommodation for the homeless.

The new flats will mean people ready to progress and rebuild their lives can do so independently, with support from the YMCA still close by.

The affordable rent will enable residents to move forward in their aspiration to work and contribute positively to their community and wider society.

Site preparation is expected to begin shortly, with main building work getting underway in January.

YMCA Birmingham has been operating in the Northfield area for 60 years and in Birmingham for 170 years. This new development secures their place as a major provider of homelessness support and intervention in south west Birmingham.

Residents at Magdalene Court have become homeless for a wide range of issues, and receive assistance from YMCA staff to overcome the challenges they have faced so that they can move on in their lives.

YMCA Birmingham Chief Executive, Alan Fraser said: “We are delighted to receive the green light for this exciting new development. Residents in our supported housing consistently tell us that one of their biggest worries is where they can move on to once they no longer require the dedicated support we provide at Magdalene Court.

“This scheme will address this challenge directly, providing low-cost, self-contained, secure accommodation for people leaving supported housing. Residents will be able to live independently, but with the security of knowing that support is on hand close by if they ever need it.”
