As part of our 2019 General Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in Northfield, Bromsgrove, Edgbaston and Selly Oak constituencies asking them to contribute to this election’s ‘500 Words’ series.

Each candidate has been invited to describe themselves and their campaigns in their own words. Their submissions will be published without editing, in the order that they are received. Should they be longer than 500 words, they will be cropped.

Sajid Javid • Conservative • Bromsgrove

Over the past nine years, I’ve had the opportunity to stand up for one of the most hardworking, kind-hearted communities that our country has to offer. It has been the greatest privilege of my career.

This Christmas, I’m standing to represent you once more. I’m standing because in my lifetime, there has never been a General Election where the stakes have been higher for the future of our community – or for our country.

Corbyn and the Liberal Democrats have spent three years blocking every option on the table, leaving Parliament in a state of paralysis and stagnation. This has meant that the real issues that make a difference to resident’s lives – issues like feeling safe when walking home, tackling traffic congestion and cutting red tape for small business – have been ignored.

So, when I speak to residents on the doorstep, my message is clear – let’s move forward, end the delay and continue to make Bromsgrove a fantastic place to live, work and raise a family.

Since 2010, 1500 more businesses have made Bromsgrove District their home – but to create an even stronger local economy, we need to continue to back small business and the residents behind them.

That’s why the Conservatives will continue to cut red tape and make it easier for business to succeed; and it’s also why I will work hard to attract new employers to our area and continue to host my annual Jobs Fair.

We will also invest in our local public services – backing the people’s priorities.

That’s why the Conservatives will put hundreds more police officers on our streets in West Mercia, give the NHS the biggest cash boost in its history and level up schools funding in Worcestershire by £17.7m next year alone.

And we will also launch an ‘infrastructure revolution’, rolling out gigabit broadband rural areas, tackling traffic congestion and prioritising road & rail improvements – including the A38.

On December 12th, you have a choice. A vote for Corbyn or the Lib Dems is a vote for another hung Parliament, plagued by the same infighting, confusion and indecision – ready to waste the next three months just like it wasted the last three years.

Or you can vote for a Conservative majority, that’s going to Get Brexit Done, pass the Great New Deal that the Prime Minister has negotiated with the EU – and get on with working on the issues that will create a stronger, better future for Bromsgrove – and for Britain.
