New CGI images – showing what the revamped historic Navigation Inn could look like – have been submitted to city planners. [Click images to enlarge].

Pub chain giant Wetherspoon have submitted the images as to Birmingham City Council as part of an application for illuminated signage related to the renovated pub.

The company bought the vacant public house in September for £1.2 million. Separate plans to renovate the 19th Century pub were submitted in October last year.

The plans – which are still awaiting approval – would see the pub reopen as ‘The Navigation’ with a smaller front car park making way for a beer garden and a small link extension between the main building and the stable block.

The majority of the ground floor (5,700 square metres) will be a customer area.

Proposed opening hours

In line with Wetherspoons provision of catering throughout the day, the proposed opening hours for the pub are:

  • Sunday to Wednesday: 07.00am – 00.30am
  • Thursday to Saturday – 07.00am – 01.30am

There would also be an extra hour of opening added to specific days throughout the year, these being: Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, Sundays before bank holidays and the Sunday morning that British Summertime begins.

Recent History

The future of the historic pub was plunged into uncertainty when owners Greene King sold the 19th century building in January 2018

Bought by a private buyer, a planning application was submitted to Birmingham City Council to convert the original building into apartments as part of a housing development on the site.

However, the planning application was subsequently withdrawn and the building placed back on the market and subsequently bought by Wetherspoon.

Speaking after confirming the purchase last year, a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said that, subject to planning permission, it was hoped that the pub could be open by July 2020.
