Work is now underway to prepare a new community building in Northfield and a team of young Prince’s Trust volunteers have been working hard to help.
‘A better place’
The Prince’s Trust team have been helping to refurbish the empty space above shops in Price’s Square to create a central base for charities and community groups from across Northfield constituency.
The team even managed to convince Birmingham City Council repairs contractor Wilmott Dixon / Fortem to donate kitchen units and tools for the project.
The group have been getting arty with their decorating skills, painting inspirational quotes and images on the walls of the space.
The Prince’s Trust team is made up of young members of the local community who all share the same vision, to make Northfield a better place for everyone that lives there.
Community Space
The community space – dubbed ‘Northfield House’ until an official name is chosen – still has a long way to go but should open some time in the summer.
The empty office space was secured from Birmingham City Council by Northfield Stakeholders Group in January as a way for the community to make use of a building which had been vacant for some time.
The space will be used for different charities with services including a food bank, sexual health advice centre, employability help, arts and even theatre training.
Rebecca Debenham, Chief Executive of Northfield Community Partnership and Vice Chair of Northfield Stakeholders’ Group said: “We are incredibly grateful and proud of the work of the Princes Trust 125 Digbeth team and the work that the young people have been doing to bring new life in to a community building that has laid vacant for many years.
“The young people have taken the project very seriously and without their help we would not have been able to make such good progress on the building. They should be very pleased with themselves; they are an outstanding example of community action.”
Handover
The team have been working hard to ensure the rooms they have worked on can be opened in time for the handover to Northfield Stakeholders Group at 2pm on Thursday 4th May.
