As part of our 2017 General Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in Northfield, Bromsgrove, Edgbaston and Selly Oak constituencies asking them to contribute to this election’s ’500 Words’ series.

Spoz Esposito – Green Party – Bromsgrove
Well, here we are again … and so soon!
Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone in the constituency of Bromsgrove who voted for me in 2015, all 1729 of you! I’ll be standing again on June 8th for The Green Party, whose policies make perfect sense to me. A party of environmental, economic and social justice, fairness and compassion. The true party of “we’re all in this together”, so why don’t we all get on together for the greater good? Humans huh? We’re a fickle bunch.
Presently, we’re hearing lots of ‘strong and stable’ rhetoric from the Conservatives. You know something is amiss when this level of repetitive rhetoric is triggered on an ‘autoplay’ basis.
“What was that crashing noise Theresa?” asked mommy.
“Nothing mommy! She replied. “The glass coffee table was … er … is strong and stable! Strong and stable!” she reiterated in the hope that mommy wouldn’t suss out her insincerity.
At a time when strength and stability really is required, Theresa May is entering media seminars to ‘hand picked’ audience members through the back door of venues. She is visibly awkward and uncomfortable in the presence of an ‘unfiltered’ public. She is making ‘fighting talk’ speeches with the conviction of a frightened puppy to nations that the UK will need to negotiate with for the greater good of all concerned. This kind of ‘spoilt brat in a school playground’ behaviour is neither strong, nor stable. For strength, stability and resilience, she only need look to Caroline Lucas and Jonathan Bartley for what her sought after characteristics look like in the face of adversity and in real life.
And then comes the Tory manifesto. How can that fill anyone with hope? A ‘dementia’ tax? An attack on pensions and pensioners? No free school lunches for children? Repeal on the fox hunting ban? Really? What century are we in?!! This is not a manifesto of hope, nor a forward looking government. We, as a nation, have the money (we’re the 5th richest country in the world, so the experts tell us) to create a society where no one is left out, to create a society for the greater good. It’s just in the wrong hands.
Based on my last election ‘success’ (the Green Party polled more than double the votes in Bromsgrove since it previously stood, so I’m calling it a success!), many people might be saying “what’s the point in you standing again Spoz? You’ll never get in!” Fair point I guess. But locally, and especially nationally, I’ve seen swathes of vulnerable people and communities being targeted by this wicked government. I’ve seen the NHS going ‘critical’ under their watch. I’ve seen schools take a beating under their ‘leadership’. They’ve steered the ship into the rocks, because they own the lifeboats. This Tory government is wrong and has failed on so many levels. Time for hope for the many rather than the decadence of the few.
