Man charged in relation to tragic West Heath flat explosion

A man has been before Birmingham magistrates facing charges relating to an explosion in a West Heath maisonette over 3 years ago.

The man was seriously injured in the explosion in November 2014 and a second injured man sadly died just over a week later.

West Midlands Police said that 30 year old Darren Stevenson from West Heath faces charges of manslaughter, arson with intent to endanger life and producing cannabis.

Stevenson and a second man were found with serious burns after emergency services rushed to the scene of the large explosion in Aldersmead Road, West Heath on the evening of 23rd November 2014.

Tobias Gordon, 32, sadly died in hospital as a result of his injuries on 2nd December 2014.

No-one else was injured in the incident. The block of four maisonettes was demolished shortly afterwards.

Stevenson appeared at Birmingham Magistrates Court yesterday (Saturday 27th January 2018) and was remanded in custody. He is set to appear for trial at Birmingham Crown Court on 23rd February.
