The driver of a car which collided with a tree in Weoley Castle this morning is believed to have suffered a ‘medical episode’ shortly before the crash.

Ambulance crews arrived to find a bystander performing CPR on the man, who was in cardiac arrest. Crews managed to restart his heart using a defibrillator and their Advanced Life Support (ALS) skills, before transferring him to hospital in a serious condition.

Barnes Hill was closed towards Northfield from the junction with Weoley Castle Road while emergency services attended the incident, which happened at around 8.20am

A West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) spokesman confirmed that two ambulances and two paramedics attended.

He said: “On arrival, crews were told by bystanders that the car driver, a man, appeared to have suffered a medical episode prior to the collision.

“The man was found to be in cardiac arrest and a bystander was already performing CPR.

“Ambulance staff used a defibrillator and administered advanced life support, successfully managing to restart the man’s heart.”

The man was transferred to hospital by land ambulance where, on arrival, his condition was described as ‘serious’.

The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford was also called to the scene but was not needed.

Our thoughts are with the man and his family and friends and we hope he has a full recovery.

Well done to the WMAS staff and the bystander who contributed to his resuscitation.
