As part of our 2018 Local Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in 16 wards across South West Birmingham, asking them to contribute to this election’s ’500 Words’ series.
Each candidate has been invited to describe themselves and their campaigns in their own words. Their submissions will be published – without editing – in the order that they are received. Should they be longer than 500 words, they will be cropped.
With the formation of new wards across the city, this is an all-out election, with every seat up for grabs. Some wards have one seat and some have two. Learn more about the ward changes and your candidates.
Our latest submission comes from one of two Labour candidates for Edgbaston ward, where two seats are being decided: Jenny Nolan
Next week, on Thursday 3rd May, Edgbaston Ward will have the opportunity to vote for a change in direction and elect two brand new Councillors. I have lived in Edgbaston for 29 years and as a local resident I care deeply about this area and the community.
Marcus Bernasconi, myself and our tireless team have been out in the ward and also on the phone, speaking with residents. We have listened to your views and concerns. As a result we have already ensured your voices are heard in relation to crime and road change consultations, we have involved ourselves in casework, attended residents associations, homelessness prevention discussions and supported those who feel their voices have not been heard. Time and time again, I have heard people tell me they don’t see the point of voting because Councillors don’t do anything for them; I want to change that. I have always been interested in politics but primarily, I am a teacher and a workplace union representative and I am here to work with local people to resolve issues because I live here too and I have the same concerns. Moreover, I am a Labour and Cooperative candidate and I want to use these values to work with you and develop pragmatic solutions to the issues we face.
Make no mistake, there is a lot of work to be done. Be it our roads, nursery and school cuts, litter and the environment, affordable housing, cuts to services and policing but I am determined to make a change. In Edgbaston, we have had to put up with £8million in national Tory Government cuts to local Council services but I do not believe this is the most effective solution and I will be fighting your corner to get this money back and invested in our community.
The Residents of Edgbaston Ward spoke and voted for Preet Gill MP, our Labour and Cooperative Member of Parliament in the General Election last year, now imagine how much more effective our response to issues and our impact will be with three of us working for you! All three of us live in this area and have connections here, we want to work with you. Remember, ward boundaries for this ward have changed and every Labour vote counts! We need each and every one of you to turn out to vote for change on the 3rd May! You have two votes and it is so important you make them both Labour so we can have a united front in this ward and lobby the Government for a better deal for Edgbaston and Birmingham.
