As part of our 2018 Local Election coverage, we have contacted each candidate standing in 16 wards across South West Birmingham, asking them to contribute to this election’s ’500 Words’ series.
Each candidate has been invited to describe themselves and their campaigns in their own words. Their submissions will be published – without editing – in the order that they are received. Should they be longer than 500 words, they will be cropped.
With the formation of new wards across the city, this is an all-out election, with every seat up for grabs. Some wards have one seat and some have two. Learn more about the ward changes and your candidates.
Our latest submission comes from Labour’s candidate for Frankley Great Park ward, where one seat is being decided: Andrew Cartwright.
Many residents have stated that crime, unemployment , child poverty, isolation for elderly , off road bikes, ASB, abounded vehicles, car theft, dumping, NHS and more are the concerns that effect them every day.
Over the past year I have ensured that your voices have been heard by raising these issues with front line public services, by working together I ensured that your needs have been considered in the decision making process. I have worked along side the Police on many local issues and raised the actions that make a negative impact on your everyday living, emphasising the need for more Police on our streets for local people.
Our community in certain hot spots has been blighted by dumping , thankfully together with the community we pulled together which resulted in enforcement taking action where fines were given and cameras were put up to gather evidence esp around Ravenhays Road and Hollymoor. There is no excuse for dumping.
Longbridge is going through the biggest regeneration in one community, I continuously insist that any major employer that is coming into the area needs to ensure we create jobs and opportunities for local people. Plus following feedback from residents I also fight for support for new business start ups. Whilst we are having investment it also important to support our local Heritage.
Pulling businesses and community groups together I have been able to make a difference including hampers at Christmas for local individuals and families and organising a goods collection for Grenfell towers.
Our community has 34% children living in deprivation from all back grounds , the Tory cuts to School dinners will increase this number. The children’s society stated the huge step backwards means there will be over 1 million children in the UK that could benefit from free School meals.
I strongly believe that no person should be a silent statistic, I always raise your issues.
On May 3rd you have a chance to reelect me to ensure your voice and needs are represented and listened too.
