Local firefighters have appealed to members of the public to report those responsible after battling two more fires on a disused quarry in Rubery yesterday (Wednesday 4th July) – one almost reaching nearby homes.
West Midlands Fire Service sent two pumps and a smaller BRV to extinguish a fire on the Cock Hill quarry earlier in the day but were called back after 8pm when a second blaze took hold.
Five pumps attended the later fire, with residents reporting that flames came within 1 metre of back gardens of properties in Brookdale Close.

Residents reported seeing 4 lads run from the open space, minutes before the fire was spotted.
There have been several large fires on the site over the last 10 days, with the largest blaze spanning 2,000 sq metres.
Northfield Watch Commander Adrian Lyden appealed for people to speak out against those starting the fires. Thanking local people for their support, he said: “If anyone knows who is starting these fires, please contact West Midlands Police.
“Remember, while we are dealing with these incidents, we can’t be dealing with other emergencies. It could be you or your family who needs us.”
West Midlands Fire Service also tweeted to say: “Arson is a crime and puts additional strain on fire services at an already busy time of year.”
Northfield Station Commander Lee Baker confirmed that firefighters were liaising with Birmingham City Council’s Lickey Hills based rangers on installing more preventative fire breaks on the site.
