#PositiveSWBrum: Northfield Sainsbury’s raises a massive £16,000 for Comic Relief

$

Sainsbury’s Northfield want to thank staff and customers after the store raised a massive £16,000 for Comic Relief this year!

There were a variety of fundraising events during the weeks leading up to Red Nose Day on Friday 24th March: staff wearing silly wigs and disguises in store, a quiz night, a tombola and more.

Staff also took place in a cake competition which was judged by MP for Northfield Richard Burden. The sweet creation from café manager Tina Preston, who dressed as Cruella Da Ville from 101 Dalmatians on the day, came out on top.

The store manager said: Our customers and colleagues are always keen to raise as much as possible for Red Nose Day and come up with lots of fun and creative ways to do it. I’m really proud that we’ve been able to contribute to the impressive figure donated from Sainsbury’s to Comic Relief.”

On Red Nose Day, Sainsbury’s announced it had raised £11.6 million for the charity with more funds still to be collected.

Well done to all who supported Comic Relief this year!

Longbridge residents and visitors have been enjoying Easter celebrations at Longbridge town centre, with an Easter art display and a craft market still to enjoy.

Palm Sunday

Visitors – like Aiden (6) & Demi Lee (3) Collins – were invited to pet Ernie the donkey and to learn about the animal’s significance in the events leading up to traditional Easter celebrations. Attendees were also treated to a cuddle with a day old lamb, Ben.

Volunteers from God’s Heart for Longbridge were on hand to share information about the meaning of Easter… along with chocolate Easter eggs!

Janice Paine, from God’s Heart for Longbridge commented: “The donkey is a symbolic animal as it represents an animal of peace, which is why it was chosen by Jesus to ride into Jerusalem.”

Market

This coming Saturday (15th April), there will be a ‘handmade’ and homemade’ market outside Park Point, with stalls displaying handmade jewellery, decorations, desserts and flavoured gins and vodkas made by independent businesses and local craftsmen. The market will run from 9am to 5pm.

Art display

Artwork by London artist, Jenny Hawke, is on display in the window of one of the empty retail units until Sunday (16th April).  “The stations of the cross” depicts Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion.

Andrea Clarke, Longbridge town centre manager, commented: “The Easter celebrations are the first of a series of events we will be running at Longbridge town centre over the coming 12 months and we think they will be very attractive to the local community and especially families with young children.”

Teen GUILTY of violent Bartley Green taxi robberies

$

A Bartley Green teenager has been found guilty of offences relating to a series of terrifying, violent robberies from taxi drivers in the area last year.

Guilty: Mohammed Abdurahman (19)

Mohammed Abdurahman used false names to book taxis to pick him up near his Rush Green home. The 19 year old, together with accomplices, threatened the drivers, demanding cash and personal items. Some had weapons and on some occasions violence was used, with two drivers even being forced into the back of their own taxis and driven away as part of the groups’ efforts to get them to part with belongings.

The 19 year-old was behind three robberies in Bartley Green between October and December last year:

  • 27th October, Corn Mill Close: Abdurahman and others threatened a driver with knives, taking two high-value mobile phones, PDA system and cash.
  • 30th October, Mill Lane: Booked a taxi for one passenger into the City Centre but was joined by two others. Abdurahman punched the driver in the face and then pulled out a 12-inch knife demanding money. The driver was dragged into the back of his VW Touran and taken to a cashpoint and – despite a failed attempt to withdraw money from the machine – a phone, money on the cabbie and his car were taken.
  • 8th December, Mill Lane: Taxi requested to go to Heartlands Hospital. The driver was forced out of the car and suspected CS spray was let off in his face. The driver was driven to a secluded area where Abduraham made off with an Apple Watch while his two accomplices made off with a mobile phone and satnav.

After appeals on social media and CCTV checks, Abdurahman was arrested at his home on 10th December.

Despite his attempts to hide it, offers spotted an Apple Watch and were able to confirm it belonged to the last victim.

Initially, Abdurahman denied any involvement in the crimes but he went on to plead guilty to three charges of robbery, two of kidnapping, and having offensive weapons.

He was sentenced to 10 years at a young offenders institute at Birmingham Crown Court last Monday (10th April).

DC Darren Lennox, from Force CID, said: “These were terrifying experiences for the three victims who were out and about doing their normal business. These were particularly violent robberies where Abdurahman played a lead role.

“He initially refused to accept responsibility for these horrible crimes, but the weight of evidence built up against him. This sentence should serve as a strong warning that such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Investigations into the incidents are still ongoing in attempts to prosecute others involved. If anyone has any information that may help police with ensures, please call 101. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Longbridge to host 10k charity race to support young homeless

$

Longbridge developers St Modwen are set to sponsor a new 10k run in Longbridge in support of LandAid, the property industry charity tackling youth homelessness.

The launch of the LandAid Midlands 10K follows the success of the LandAid 10K in London, which is now in its 21st year, with 800 runners taking part last year.

Taking place in September, the inaugural LandAid Midlands 10k will welcome runners of all abilities. Runners will race around the £1 billion redevelopment of the area, which is being transformed from the home of motoring innovation into a vibrant new community by St. Modwen.

LandAid is a charity which brings together the property industry to make a positive difference to the lives of young people who are at risk of homelessness. The charity hopes to raise £30,000 from the race, which will help convert long-term empty properties into safe, warm homes for vulnerable young people as part of their ‘Sponsor a Home’ campaign. The majority of funds raised will support young homeless people in the Midlands, with the rest going towards other homelessness projects across the UK.

Left to right: Suzi Edwards – PwC and LandAid Midlands Board member; Tom Johnson – Pinsent Masons and LandAid Midlands Board member; Stephen Prosser – Midlands Regional Director, St. Modwen; Mark Allan – CEO, St. Modwen; Damian Lloyd – GVA and LandAid Midlands Board member, Victoria Smith – Opus Land and Chair of LandAid’s Midlands Board

Chief Executive of LandAid, Paul Morrish, said: “We’re thrilled to be holding our first LandAid Midlands 10K this year. LandAid has a strong presence in the Midlands, with a track record of supporting projects that tackle youth homelessness in the region, and with a new LandAid Midlands Board established to help drive fundraising.

“Too many young people still face the danger and insecurity of having nowhere safe to sleep at night, which is why we are calling on as many runners as possible to lace up their trainers and join the race to end youth homelessness in the Midlands”.

Mark Allan, Chief Executive at St. Modwen said: “We are very proud to be the hosts and headline sponsors of LandAid’s first 10K run in Birmingham. St. Modwen is committed to creating long-term sustainable communities and breathing new life into areas that need it the most across the UK. Therefore, we place great importance on the work LandAid carries out, delivering life changing services to young people facing homelessness.

Mr Allan added: “Longbridge is a perfect destination for the 10K run and we look forward to participating in the event alongside colleagues, partners and clients in September.”

Entry costs £30 per individual and tickets go on sale today, Tuesday 25th April 2017: Enter the LandAid Midlands 10k

Jodie said: “I left school and chose not to go to sixth form or college and went and did Camp America. […] at 21 – after suffering with horrendous mental health problems – I began a 7 week voluntary training programme with the BBC. I then went on to doing an apprenticeship with Creative Alliance in Digital Marketing.

“I have been promoted 3 times since being with Creative Alliance, up to my current job as marketing and project coordinator for 10 renowned arts and cultural organisations. If it wasn’t for Creative Alliance I would never have got as far as I have now.”

Update via West Midlands Police 1900hrs 30/4/17

A man is in hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm after an incident in Bartley Green this afternoon.

Gunshots heard

West Midlands Police were called to Parkside, near the junction with Clapgate Lane, at around 4.15pm to a report of gunshots heard.

Armed officers responded within minutes and found two vehicles abandoned in the street. A VW Golf – with apparent bullet holes to the windscreen –  and a Vauxhall Corsa have been recovered for forensic examination, along with a third vehicle from the scene. Officers conducted a fingertip search of the area while forensic experts examined the scene.

Police believe that three offenders fled the scene on foot and efforts are ongoing to trace them.

‘Deliberately targeted’

West Midlands Police said: “A 29-year-old man later presented himself to hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm – his injury is not life threatening. It’s understood the man was walking in Parkside at the time of the incident and that he was deliberately targeted.”

‘Unrelated’ incidents

A police spokeswoman told the Birmingham Mail that a later incident in Weoley Castle Square which saw a 16 year old lad arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm, and a pellet gun incident in Quinton, were unrelated to the Woodgate shooting. Read more in Birmingham Mail

Comment on new Northfield golf course housing development application

$
0
0

There are just two days left to register your comments – in support of or against – the latest planning application for a housing development on a former Northfield golf course.

A planning application for the development of land at the former North Worcestershire Golf Club in Hanging Lane for housing was withdrawn in March.

Developers Bloor went for further public consultation on revised plans after the initial application looked destined to be rejected by city planners.

The newest application was submitted last month and developers hope that their amendments will make a difference to the outcome.

However, earlier this year on looking at and approving the Birmingham Development Plan, the government’s chief planning officer stated the land was not suitable as a housing development.

There has been a mixed reaction to the plans from locals with some feeling the land needs to be used and others being opposed on grounds such as demands on local infrastructure and services, traffic increases and the environment.

Cllr Andy Cartwright said: “This is not a done deal. We have housing still being built in Longbridge ward and we have gone over our quota. When the Longbridge Area Action Plan was agreed this part of the ward wasn’t included. All the planned infrastructure has not taken this part into account. Including health providers and public services. The houses will not solve the crisis but add to the traffic issues directly in that area.

“The community and myself are asking for the shareholders who only a few live locally to reconsider and open up negation so with other leisure providers and businesses bring jobs into the area and not leave those that live by in mayhem. Businesses have come forward but not given time to put their offers on the table.”

Some key amendments to address concerns raised:

First & second applications compared (click to enlarge)
  • Primary Education: In the previous plan, Bloor earmarked land for a school but had no plans to contribute to its construction. In the new application, Bloor would contribute to the school building to the cost of the anticipated increased demand on local primary schools – roughly equivalent to the provision of 1.2 forms.
  • Secondary Education: In the new proposal, developers have offered a contribution of around £3 million for local secondary provision.
  • Reduced Number Of Properties: To allow for greater green space, the number of proposed properties has been decreased by 50 to 950.
  • Green Space: Overall green space on the site has been increased by 11%, creating a ‘green corridor’ which divides the development in two. Some green space has been repositioned to address the concerns of Birmingham City Council ecology, tree and leisure officers.
  • Sports provision: Sport England advised that the multi use pitch initially planned should be off site. Developers have instead replaced that with an open casual play space and will instead provide around £3 million for local sports provision
  • Community hub: The community centre will be built by the developer and it is suggested it will be used and run by St Bartholomews Church, who lost their own building in Hoggs Lane to fire some years ago and currently use Holloway Hall. It is also suggested there will be a community space.
  • Local services: Developers claim to be in discussion with a GP provider regarding the possible use of the community hub. However, they are unable to give further details at this point and no agreements have been made.

Council secures loan to help build new homes in Kings Norton & Druids Heath

$

Birmingham City Council has secured a loan to help towards housing regeneration and renewal across the city – including on Kings Norton’s ‘3 Estates’ and in Druids Heath.

The £45 million loan has been agreed with life and pensions company Phoenix Life, based in Wythall.

The Birmingham Development Plan highlights the need to build 89,000 new homes across the city by 2031. After a lengthy and detailed consultation, the plan was approved by the government earlier this year.

The plan seeks to regenerate or renew existing council housing stock, as well as building new homes across Birmingham.

The housing redevelopment on Kings Norton’s Primrose Hill and Pool Farm estates will see 1400 new properties being built – 500 more homes than were there previously – alongside improved green space, a new supermarket and centre off Redditch Road, a ‘New Fold’ shopping area and a new youth centre. The Kings Norton Planning Framework scheme is expected to take 15 to 20 years to complete.

As part of the Birmingham Development Plan: “The Druids Heath Estate will be the focus of selective redevelopment and renewal to create a new neighbourhood, and deliver long-term social, economic and environmental improvements including over 500 homes.”

Phoenix Life has agreed to lend the council funds at mutually beneficial rates of interest, supporting the Company’s annuity investment strategy and enabling the Company to invest in its local community.

Chief Executive, Andy Moss said: “I am delighted that as a major employer in the Birmingham area, we have been able to arrange this deal. I would hope to see further projects of this nature in the future.”

Northfield MP Richard Burden said: “Birmingham City Council has reached a really forward-looking agreement here. We need new thinking to get investment into building the affordable homes that people in Birmingham need. This initiative by Birmingham’s Labour Council is an example of just that.”

South West Birmingham gangs: communities respond

$
0
0

Many people read – and are talking about – yesterday’s Birmingham Mail article about gangs and violence in our corner of the city.

The article – quoting an anonymous ‘community source’ – depicts South West Birmingham as a terrifying, gang-infested area.

There are known issues with gangs around the area and police are taking steps to deal with those involved – arrests have been made. People are concerned, but, do we recognise this as our area?

The issue of gangs was raised and discussed at the last Longbridge police tasking and neighbourhood watch meeting, for example, resulting in local politicians meeting with representatives from West Midlands Police to raise community concerns on this and other issues.

The police are also working hard, alongside local partners, politicians, educators and community groups, to gain information and to find creative ways of combating and preventing further issues.

Our local communities are already concerned about these issues and do want to know that the police are actively seeking to address them – so, has this newspaper article inspired more fear in those who were already nervous?

West Midlands Police need members of the public to come forward with information to help them combat these issues in our communities.

If you have any information on gangs, violence or other crimes, please inform the police.
Alternatively, you can pass on information completely anonymously via Crimestoppers: call 0800 555111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org

We asked some of our local politicians and stakeholders to respond to yesterday’s article in the Birmingham Mail about gangs currently active in our corner of the city.

Here are some of their responses:

Superintendent Mat Shaer • Birmingham West • West Midlands Police

We’ve got officers and staff working around the clock to close in on those gangs who bring fear to our communities. Our efforts continue to disrupt those networks, take their weapons away and ultimately get them punished for the criminal activities they think they can carry out with impunity.

For example on Friday, 19-year-old Marcel Mullings-Boyd, of Out Wood Drive, Northfield, is due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to possessing a handgun and cannabis production.

In other separate matters, a number of youths remain on bail after allegedly taking part in a video distributed on a video-sharing site. The footage – as well as seemingly glorifying gang violence – also refers to specific incidents of violence and contains threats to rival gangs.

There is no let-up in our approach to tackle violent crime if we are to prevent serious injuries and if we are to reassure the people of Birmingham.

The on-going deterrent work continues together with our partner agencies, charities and the community, which is a crucial part of our long-term plan to tackle violent crime.

The public are our eyes and ears and I would appeal directly to the communities of Birmingham – please, contact us with any information you have about those committing violent crime and gang activity in our city.”

Richard Burden MP • Labour • Northfield Constituency

The emergence of these street gangs in South Birmingham is certainly cause for serious concern. I have been in close touch with the Police about it for some time now. I can reassure people that a dedicated Police operation is in place with targeted actions ongoing to disrupt the activities of those involved.

A number of arrests have already been made. Just as important is the cooperation taking place between schools and the Police to divert young people at risk of becoming involved in gangs away from criminal  activities that offer them no future.

It in no way undermines the seriousness of this issue, however, to emphasise that only a small minority of young people get involved in these gangs and that it would be  entirely wrong to allow young people in and around Northfield to be stigmatised because of the actions of the few.

Let us remember too that these gangs are not what makes Northfield tick. There is so much that is positive about people who live around here – young and not so young. Nurturing, celebrating and taking pride in all that is good about our community is as important to safeguarding the future as is cracking down on criminal gangs.

Rev Dave Tubby • Chair: Northfield Stakeholders Group • Minister: Northfield Baptist Church

I am immensely proud to be part of this community. This is a vibrant place full of people who want to make a positive difference.

Every single day, I see people seeking to work together, bringing new ideas and initiatives to Northfield. There are many, many incredibly talented and gifted people here and there is a real sense of community.

What the Birmingham Mail has identified as ‘communities living in fear’ I do not recognise at all. This is a place where the community works together incredibly well.

Northfield Stakeholders’ Group is a great example of that. Over 40 local charities, businesses and community organisations with cross-party political support and regular input from the police is working hard to support the area.

The desire to work together here is strong and it is a great privilege to be part of community life here.

Cllr John Lines • Bartley Green • Conservative

In recent times, a great deal of negative reports and publicity has been presented – mainly by one source – regarding law & order issues in my ward.

This adverse publicity distorts the true situation. This headline grabbing is painting my ward as a crime hot spot, which it is not!

Bartley Green is one of our safest areas in the city. From the successful lobbying by Cllr Bruce Lines over time, the police numbers have been increased, in recent times and the commitment by police officers further our confidence[..]

Cllr Peter Douglas Osborn • Weoley • Conservative • Member of the Police and Crime Commissioner Panel

Though we all wish to support our area and deny the general media insults – it is after all a very small minority – we must nevertheless inform the authorities about any criminal behaviour.

This will reduce a future attack on our area’s reputation, but more importantly will impress [upon] the general public that we – as Brummies of the South West – have zero tolerance for anti social types, and no sympathy for them or their apologists.

We shall never allow them the space to expand here!

#PositiveSWBrum: Young volunteers help clean up Northfield community building

Work is now underway to prepare a new community building in Northfield and a team of young Prince’s Trust volunteers have been working hard to help.

‘A better place’

The Prince’s Trust team have been helping to refurbish the empty space above shops in Price’s Square to create a central base for charities and community groups from across Northfield constituency.

The team even managed to convince Birmingham City Council repairs contractor Wilmott Dixon / Fortem to donate kitchen units and tools for the project.

The group have been getting arty with their decorating skills, painting inspirational quotes and images on the walls of the space.

The Prince’s Trust team is made up of young members of the local community who all share the same vision, to make Northfield a better place for everyone that lives there.

Community Space

Rev Dave Tubby & Northfield Community Partnership’s Rebecca Debenham receive the keys to Price’s Square!

The community space – dubbed ‘Northfield House’ until an official name is chosen – still has a long way to go but should open some time in the summer.

The empty office space was secured from Birmingham City Council by Northfield Stakeholders Group in January as a way for the community to make use of a building which had been vacant for some time.

The space will be used for different charities with services including a food bank, sexual health advice centre, employability help, arts and even theatre training.

Rebecca Debenham, Chief Executive of Northfield Community Partnership and Vice Chair of Northfield Stakeholders’ Group said: “We are incredibly grateful and proud of the work of the Princes Trust 125 Digbeth team and the work that the young people have been doing to bring new life in to a community building that has laid vacant for many years.

“The young people have taken the project very seriously and without their help we would not have been able to make such good progress on the building. They should be very pleased with themselves; they are an outstanding example of community action.”
