West Midlands Ambulance Service have this morning confirmed that a man – aged just 19 – was sadly killed in a serious collision in Selly Oak last night (Thursday 17th January).

The accident happened at around 10.30pm on Bristol Road southbound, opposite the Witherford Way junction, when a car – a Chevrolet Matiz – collided with a tree.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended the scene, closing the carriageway towards Northfield between Weoley Park Road and Bournville Lane.

The Bournville Lane police station based mental health triage car – with a paramedic, police officer and mental health nurse – was first on scene, arriving within two minutes of the 999 call being made.

However, despite best efforts, the man was sadly confirmed dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the car.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “The driver of the car, a man, was in a serious condition following a collision with a tree. Ambulance staff immediately began to administer trauma care to the man. Despite the best efforts of ambulance staff, police and fire colleagues nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead a short time later at the scene.”

West Midlands Police confirmed that the man’s family had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

The road remained closed into the early hours of this morning (Friday 19th) while investigators examined the scene.
