A newspaper delivery driver was left unconscious this morning (Sunday 7th July) after being dragged from his van by a gang who later used his vehicle to steak off-road bikes in a ram raid.
Carjacking
The driver was forced to break suddenly when a woman rode her bicycle in front of his delivery van in Umberslade Road, in Stirchley / Selly Oak just after 6am.
Unconscious
He was then dragged from the van by two men and assaulted. The man was left unconscious and was taken to hospital where he remains under observation for head injuries.
Ram raid
Less than an hour later, the van was used to ram the front of a motorcycle shop in Chester Road in Sutton Coldfield. Three off-road bikes were stolen.
Arrests
Just before 7.30am, police were then alerted to disorder in Ivy Road, Stirchley where a group of men were causing a noise nuisance and arguing with neighbours. When officers arrived they found a man and a woman with two of the suspected stolen off-road bikes.
The 30-year-old man, from Wolverhampton, fled down an alleyway and after a short footchase was detained. The 37-year-old woman, from Birmingham, was also arrested at the scene and both remain in custody on suspicion of robbery and burglary while enquiries continue.
The bikes and the stolen van have been recovered and will be forensically examined.
