School children from across the city have taken part in a very special Rugby World Cup tournament … in Hopwood!
Twenty tag rugby teams made up of boys and girls from eleven primary schools were given a warm welcome at the Kings Norton RFC World Cup 2019 festival yesterday (Wednesday 10th July).
The event was organised by the club’s Rhinos junior section, including Rhinos Coach Craig Ellicott, who is also assistant headteacher at St John Bosco Catholic Primary in West Bromwich (formerly of St Laurence School, Northfield).
Tournament

Each school represented a country from around the world and, as well as the results of their games, extra points were awarded for projects they had carried out on their country and for their representation of Rugby Core Values.
Australia – aka Selly Oak’s Tiverton Academy – took the cup, with every child being awarded a medal for taking part.

Rhinos junior section Chairman Jim Williams said: “Thank you to all the Schools that participated in the Kings Norton Rugby Football Club World Cup Festival.

“Kings Norton Rugby Club are really pleased to host this event and hope the children will participate in Rugby outside of School in the future”.
Dedication
The festival – dedicated to former club president Chris Cooksey who sadly passed away in September 2018 – began with a minute of applause for the much respected, long-standing member.
A spokesperson for the club said: “The festival started with a minutes applause in memory of Chris, for all his time and dedication he devoted to the club and the game he loved.
“We are sure Chris would have been absolutely delighted and proud to see so many young people enjoying the facilities and games today.”
Chris’s sons Gareth and Phill attended to watch the great rugby being played and present medals of achievement to the children taking part.
