Murder investigation launched as Kings Norton canal death victim named

West Midlands Police have confirmed that, following a post mortem, a murder investigation has been launched into the death of a man found in a Kings Norton canal yesterday morning (Saturday 15th February).

The body of 48 year old Darren Round – a local man – was pulled from the water near Masshouse Lane after a 999 call from a member of the public at 8.40am yesterday.

During a post mortem this morning (Sunday 16th February) it was found that Mr Round had suffered significant facial injuries, consistent with an assault, before entering the water.

West Midlands Police homicide detectives have released CCTV images of Mr Round, captured shortly his death. They are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Masshouse Lane and Shannon Road – or the canal towpath – between 7.30pm on Friday 14th and 8.40am on Saturday 15th February to get in touch.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Griffiths, said: “Darren was wearing a blue coat and a rucksack. If anyone saw him or anyone else on the towpath on Friday night into Saturday morning I need them to get in touch.

“We need to understand Darren’s movements from 7.30pm when he left home to when his body was tragically found in the canal.

“If you were in the area and saw anything suspicious please make contact.”
