#SWBrumLocalHistory Some fabulous photos from the archives shared by Northfield Library – with a potted history! :)

“Northfield Library was opened in 1906 with money donated by Andrew Carnegie and land provided by the Cadbury family. The Foundation Stone was laid by Alderman T R Bayliss.

“The Library was burnt to the ground on the night of the 12th of February 1914. Suspicion fell on the local suffragettes. A note was found on the early railings proclaiming Give Women the Right to Vote together with a brown paper parcel. Inside was a book by Christabel Pankhurst on which was written to start your new library. After the fire the library was rebuilt in the same design, in the same year by the library Free Libraries Committee. It has since doubled in size with the last extension taking place in 1984.

“These photographs have come from the Library of Birmingham online archives. Northfield Library has a lot of old photographs of Northfield that can viewed when the library re-opens.”
