Members of a local junior football are set to run hundreds of kilometres to raise thousands for NHS charities.
Unable to train together at Four Dwellings in Quinton as normal, or to play their matches at Cadbury playing fields in Bournville due to coronavirus social distancing measures, the lads – aged between 7 and 13 years – from Cadbury Athletic Juniors FC have agreed to run a ‘virtual relay’ for NHS Charities Together.
Club vice-chairman and organiser Matthew Adams said: “Rather than sit around and feel sorry for ourselves, as a Football Club we want to do something together to thank our fabulous NHS for the hard work and dedication they provide each and every day to look after and support us.
“Whilst we aren’t able to play football, we can keep ourselves fit and active.”
Passing the ‘virtual’ baton
The boys will be running their own runs – of 5km for the older boys, and 1-2km for the younger lads – between Friday 15th and Sunday 17th May. Once they complete their relay leg, their completion photo will be posted on the club’s facebook page, virtually ‘passing the baton’ to the next boy to start his run!
Parents and carers have also been roped in to accompany the lads on their runs – although their miles won’t count to the relay total!
With almost 70 lads now signed up to take part, it is hoped they will achieve a grand total of at least 200km (124 miles).
‘Incredible response’
Having raised just over £2400 already, Matthew said: “It’s been an incredible response and everyone is really focused on doing well, getting fit and raising lots of money for the NHS.
“I can assure you all that the boys and parents are following your kind messages of support and getting excited and motivated to run by the generous level of donations gained.”
