A 14 year old boy has been arrested and charged with a number of robberies on young people over the last month.

The teen – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was due to appear before Birmingham magistrates today (29th September) in relation to robberies in the Selly Oak and Frankley areas between 20th August and 25th September.

The boy has also been charged with burglary.

Last week, West Midlands Police advised communities to be vigilant and aware after the string of robberies across south west Birmingham.

It was thought that the same group of offenders – aged from around 15 to 21 – had targeted teenagers and students in robberies in and around Frankley, Rubery, Selly Oak and Kings Norton

Personal items such as mobile phones and cash were stolen and it was reported on some occasions that the offenders were armed, using weapons to threaten and intimidate victims.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: “Violence is a priority for us and so far we have identified a number potential suspects and we are working to arrest them.

“Being victim of a robbery is a frightening experience. We understand that even if you’re not physically hurt if can be extremely distressing to be threatened with violence.”

Victim support can offer support to anyone who needs it and they can be contacted on 0808 1689 111.

The spokeswoman said: “Local neighbourhood teams are actively patrolling the affected areas and are working closely with the investigation team to ensure the safety of the community.

“We would urge the community to remain vigilant, consider their surroundings and report any suspicious activity or any information that may assist the case.”
