West Midlands Police have today made a second arrest in relation to a shooting in Bartley Green on Sunday 30th April as they close in on suspected gang members across South West Birmingham.
Knifepoint robbery
Police were called at 7.45am this morning (Tuesday 9th May) after three teens threatened a boy with a knife before stealing his cycle in Balmoral Road, Bartley Green.
The trio made off in a stolen people carrier and were detained by police in nearby Kyles Way. The lads aged 19, 18 and 14 were arrested on suspicion of car theft, possessing a knife and robbery.
Parkside shooting arrests
The 18 year old, from Erdington, was also wanted in relation to the shooting in Parkside, Woodgate on April 30th, where a man received a gunshot wound to his arm.
A 20 year old man from Bartley Green was arrested on 3rd May in relation to the Parkside shooting and has been questioned by police. He has since been charged with 8 counts of burglary and remains in prison custody as enquiries into the shooting continue.
Video footage arrests
Besides these arrests, five other South Birmingham teens – aged 16 and 17 – have been arrested an interviewed by police in relation to online video footage which appears to glorify gang violence. The video contains threats to rival gangs as well as references to specific violent incidents.
The five have been questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. They have been released on bail, with strict conditions, and are due back in for further questioning in July.
Police tackling gangs
West Midlands Police Organised Crime & Gangs Unit are tackling a series of incidents South Birmingham.
Chief Inspector Nick Dale said those responsible can expect a knock at the door from his officers. He said: “There has been a series of high-profile incidents in the area and members of the community are telling us they’re worried. It is unacceptable that people are being made to feel fearful in their communities…we understand those concerns and have taken action.”
CI Dale reassured that patrols have been increased and enquiries are underway to identify people linked to the gangs.
The Chief Inspector warned: “Anyone aligning themselves with these groups needs to understand they risk being arrested, put before the courts and potentially jailed. They may think it’s fun to appear masked up in a YouTube video − but the stark reality will hit them when they’re locked in a prison cell.”
Appeal for community information
And CI Dale appealed to members of the community to come forward and share information with the police. He said: “The public are our eyes and ears on the ground; if you suspect anyone is involved in gang related crime or anti-social behaviour then please contact us in confidence so we can take action.”
