A man has suffered serious eye injuries after his car was involved in a collision with a suspected stolen car in Selly Oak yesterday afternoon (Monday 29th May).

The accident happened at around 2.45pm in Gibbins Road, after the stolen car failed to stop for officers in a marked police car and involved in a short pursuit.

Gibbins Road was closed until around midnight as investigators examined the scene.

The man in the other car, in his 20s, was treated by West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics for a serious eye injury and a reduced level of consciousness before being conveyed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, a 36-year-old man, was treated for ankle, knee and elbow injuries and also taken to hospital. He was detained by officers and arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply class A drugs. He remains in police custody this morning and will be questioned later today.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said this morning: “The force’s Professional Standards Department has been informed as well as the IPCC, as is normal procedure in a collision where a police vehicle is involved.”
