A driver has been found guilty of death by dangerous driving after a local woman sadly died following a collision in Shenley Lane over two years ago.
Weoley Castle woman Elizabeth Tyndall, 36, was seriously injured when the Vauxhall Corsa she was driving was in collision with another Corsa on 8th March 2015. Sadly, she died six days later in hospital.
Both of Elizabeth’s passengers were injured in the collision: a man in his 30s who is still recovering from his serious injuries and a 12 year old boy who was discharged from hospital soon after the accident.
Birmingham Crown Court heard that Luke Harrington, 22, was driving at speeds of almost 70mph before the crash in Shenley Lane, at the junction of Gregory Avenue and Long Nuke Road – 30mph above the speed limit.
Harrington, who remained at the scene following the accident, was charged with death by dangerous driving following an investigation by West Midlands Police’s collision investigation unit.
Harrington was sentenced to six years imprisonment on Thursday 2nd November − three of which will be spent in custody and a further three on licence. He was also disqualified from driving for seven years following his release.
Detective Constable Chris Ridge, from the regional Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Harrington was of previous good character but is now facing a considerable amount of time behind bars to reflect on his actions. The consequences of his excess speed are far reaching and have ruined several lives including his own.”
After several accidents and years of campaigning by local residents and councillors, Birmingham City Council agreed to install a traffic light system at the junction just weeks after the accident.
