West Midlands Fire Service ensured the safety of a family of three and their dog following a fire in a Weoley Castle home yesterday evening (Tuesday 12th December).

Crews from Woodgate Valley, Bournbrook and Kings Norton fire stations attended the fire in a bedroom of a home in Pailton Grove.

A woman and a child were treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene by West Midlands Ambulance Service.

The family’s dog was rescued by firefighters, who could immediately give oxygen to the pet, using a recent addition to their kits – animal oxygen masks.

Firefighters referred the family to Birmingham City Council who were able to sort out temporary accommodation for them.

Woodgate firefighters took to Twitter to praise the council, who also sent a team to make the road safe – following the use of water – due to the very icy conditions.

They also reiterated the need for residents to make sure that they have working smoke alarms.

We wish the family well and hope they are getting any the help they need.
