Two men have been arrested after a recent string of house burglaries in and around Northfield.

The men – aged 39 and 20 – were arrested this morning (Wednesday 19th September) and remain in custody for questioning.

A series of burglaries, many in daylight hours, have seen thieves taking jewellery, electronics, cash, bank cards and personal items.

Sgt David Lamerton, from Northfield Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “We are aware of a recent spike in burglaries in and around the Northfield area and have been taking measures to combat such crimes.

“We have stepped up police patrols and, with the support of community intelligence, have arrested two prime suspects on suspicion of burglaries this morning.”

Sgt Lamerton offered advice to victims, saying: “We appreciate how being a victim of a burglary can be very distressing, even if nothing is stolen, the thought of a stranger being in your home can feel like a violation of your privacy and security.

“Victim Support can offer advice and support for victims, they can be contacted on 0808 1689 111.”

Anyone with any information on recent burglaries, or any other crime, is asked to contact West Midlands Police on Live Chat at www.west-midlands.police.uk (8am – midnight) or to call 101 any time. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or visit www.crimestoppers-uk.org

West Midlands Police also issued a few tips to consider to help keep your home safe:

  • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you’re just out in the garden.
  • Hide all keys out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox)
  • Install a visual burglar alarm
  • Install good outside lighting and improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges
  • Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied
  • Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition and lock side gates to prevent access to the rear of the property
  • Keep ladders and tools stored away: don’t leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home
