A man has been jailed after brutally beating his then girlfriend outside Kings Norton Railway Station in an unprovoked drunken assault last month.

The sustained attack happened in the car park at around 8pm on Wednesday 26th September, leaving the victim with two black eyes and cuts to her face.

The whole incident was caught on the station’s CCTV camera system.

Raymond Martin, 31, began his outburst by slapping his partner across the face, which caused her to fall to the floor.

He then kicked and punched her in the head as she lay motionless and unable to defend herself on the ground. As she started to come round and got to her feet, Martin struck her again across the face before walking off.

However, he returned and grabbed her before fleeing from the scene when a car entered the car park. The woman was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Shortly afterwards, British Transport Police officers traced Martin to his home in Pershore Road South, where they found him wearing a blood-splattered t-shirt.

Martin was charged with causing actual bodily harm, which he admitted. On 25 October, he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court where he was sentenced to two years in prison.

Sergeant Wayne Riley from BTP in Birmingham said: “We understand how difficult it can be for those in abusive relationships to break free and we will do everything within our power to protect victims, even if they do not make a complaint against their partner – as was the case with this investigation.

“We are satisfied with the sentence handed to Martin for this brutal and unprovoked attack, which should serve as a deterrent to those who contemplate committing such behaviour and reassure victims that the police and courts will take robust action against offenders.”
