Community stakeholders have worked together this year to bring Christmas spirit to Cotteridge this year.

After having no festive illuminations last year, Cotteridge’s businesses, faith and community groups and local councillors have joined forces to ensure the area has lights and a Christmas tree this year.

The Christmas tree was donated by Bournville Garden Centre and it was decorated with colourful festive adornments thanks to donations from Tending to Cotteridge, The Cotteridge Church, Cotteridge Quaker Meeting and some local community funds.

And this year, a generous donation from Central England Co-op Community Fund has enabled the mounting of twinkling star lights on lamp posts.

Chair of community group Tending to Cotteridge, Lucy Sobrero, said: “This year, of all years, it was important to bring some light to our corner of Birmingham. Our volunteers work hard all year to make it a pleasant place to be and the kind donation of a tree means it’ll be a special place to be this Christmas.”

Vice chair of Central England Co-operative Community Council Laurence Braithwate, who lives locally, said: “Our store has been a key part of supporting the community through two lockdowns. It was good to be able to use a community fund to bring some cheer to the area.”

Cllr Fred Grindrod (Labour, Bournville and Cotteridge) said: “It’s fantastic that we have a Christmas Tree back – my thanks to all those community organisations who, having done so much for our area during this difficult year, came together to make this happen and help Cotteridge to celebrate Christmas.’

Well done to all involved. Wishing you a very, Merry Christmas! :)
