Longbridge based Bournville College is inviting home educated students and their parents to an information evening tomorrow (Tuesday 19th June).

The event aims to show home-educated 14 to 15 year olds and their parent and carers how they could fulfil their potential within an academic environment.

Learners will have the opportunity to speak to staff and get advice on how they can progress their education within the college, be it through taking the core GCSEs of English, maths and science or through a vocational qualification.

Anna-Marie Wood, Head of Faculty for Higher Education and Academic Studies at South and City College, explains: “There are many students across Birmingham and the wider area who, for a variety of reasons, have been home-schooled. However, as GCSEs approach, parents often decide that moving their son or daughter into an academic setting will provide them with the best chance of success.

“We have successfully re-integrated home-educated 14 and 15 year olds for a number of years and due to the high demand across the region we have taken the step to open up two GCSE groups, one for year 10 and one for year 11 which are specifically designed to help students gain the key qualifications in English, maths and science.

“In addition to the core GCSE courses, we are able to offer a fantastic variety of vocational qualifications in areas such as hairdressing, hospitality, childcare, mechanics and engineering.”

Anna-Marie is hoping that “home learners will come along to explore the next step in their educational journey”.

She added: “We are looking forward to welcoming students and their parents along to the College where myself and the rest of the team will be on hand to discuss all the options available to 14 and 15 year olds.”
